In the future, we will restore semi-natural grasslands and biodiverse coastal areas through public tenders!

The Estonian Environmental Board has begun working on its restoration efforts: a newly published tender is also looking for restorers for the coastal meadows in Aandi, Laheküla, Tohvri, Tärkma II, the project area of Taguküla islands in Hiiu County, Tahu project area in Lääne County and Rootsivere on the island Saaremaa that are also being restored in the framework of the project "LIFE IP ForEst&FarmLand".

While in previous years, restoration work was primarily funded by nature conservation grants, resources are now being channelled into grassland restoration, mainly through public tenders. "A very large part of the restoration of valuable meadows is made possible with the help of European co-financing and various projects. The use of project funds places a particularly high demand on the selection of partners and the transparency of the use of funds, and public tendering is the most appropriate form for fulfilling these conditions," explained Gunnar Sein, Head of Environmental Board’s Land Management Bureau.

It is important to note that one of the prerequisites for participating in the public tender is prior examination of the area. It is vital to discuss the terms and conditions of the tender with conservation experts and to pay attention to the most important restoration nuances, so that the restoration quality meets the expectations of all parties.

Both natural and legal persons can participate in the public tender. Owners of the land to be included in the public tender have an advantage in participating.

The aim of the project is to find cooperation partners for restoring the coastal areas and to restore a complete coastal meadow that would be as large as possible and suitable for ground-nesting birds. In particular, this means cutting down trees and bushes for thinning, and partially removing reeds. To make caring the meadows possible in the future, dead tree trunks and stumps must also be removed.
